A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words…but Not to Google

The old truism about a picture being worth a thousand words is mostly true when a human looks at it.  To Google and other search engines photos and images used on your website or social media have no words and will appear to them as blank sheets of paper.

Using photos in your blog posts, social media posts and throughout your digital marketing helps bring interest and attention to your business.  So I do encourage you to use them wherever possible, but use them wisely.

In terms of the three key elements of marketing that I have talked about before, photos AROUSE INTEREST. They get people to stop and read notice your post.  If you use a photo in a social media post, be sure to follow the following best practices guidelines:

  1. Rename the photo file itself to describe the image.
  2. Use the ALT Text tag or write a description for the photo that explains the photo and remember to use keywords.
  3. In the social media post, include a description in the post or update. Remember to include relevant keywords.

How Many is Too Many?

It is not the quantity, but the quality. Many times I see dozens of photos of people at an event that are posted on Facebook. There might be a generic post update regarding the event, but the 20+ photos added do not have any descriptions. The person seeing the post and all the photos will have no clue who is in the photos or what is taking place…that is unless they were there.  I know it takes work to write a description for 20 photos.  Well, maybe you need to add fewer photos and have descriptions on those few. That may be better anyway.  After all, several famous writers including Mark Twain have said something like, I would have written you a shorter letter if I had more time. A short post will be more likely to be read and viewed. A post with 50 photos without any descriptions will end up turning people off.
