Here’s Why Google will never call you.

Several of my clients get calls saying they are from Google and that they can help improve their website rankings on a Google search. 

The first clue anyone should know is Google will never call you “out of the blue.”  Yes, you can initiate the process to have a Google Customer Service Representative call you, but you started the process.

The second clue is “they can help improve their website rankings on Google” or they say “your website is not being found in search results on Google.” Whatever the pitch it is always a good idea to stop and tell the person making the sales pitch “you never buy anything over the phone where you do not initiate the call.” Cut off the conversation and hang up.

Now my clients know they can simple say “I have delegated marketing activities to On-Q Marketing and they should contact Jeff at…” .  Most of the time, I never hear from them and when I do, I ask for more information and say how interesting this information is, but this will have to wait until the next annual budget for consideration. That tends to end the conversation and I never hear from them again. I have yet to come across any so called opportunities worthy of consideration.

Beware the “SEO Snake Oil Salesman”

Yes, sometimes companies call around the domain renewal date, stating they are from the domain registrar and that you need to renew with them today. Then there is a special offer that adds SEO benefits for only $99.95 a month.  Really? 

Most of these companies are the real “snake oil salesmen” that want you to buy a program to build links to your website.  While creating links to your website is a factor in SEO (Search Engine Optimization), Google and others only consider the valuable links and will actually downgrade your site’s rankings if link farms are used. A Link Farm is a website that has only links to various websites and nothing else. This is a terrible tactic and consider a “Black Hat SEO” tactic to be avoided.

I received a phone call from a company I partner with and she had a prospect that was caught up in one of these SEO traps.  The company had more than 14,000 back links to their website.  There is only hard work ahead in getting rid of all the back links and that is done through Google Webmaster Tools. Each and every link the company will need to contact the site, ask for the link to be removed and then log the response on a spreadsheet that will be uploaded to webmaster tools.  Obviously the $59.95 a month SEO package they purchased will cost a lot more to undo, especially since the company hired is no longer to be found.

SEO takes work and time

There are no short cuts to boosting Search Engine Optimization.  It takes time to tune up your website, all your social sites and other places where you company “lives’ online. Then the constant need to tweak your website and publish new content on a regular basis focusing on the keywords important to your business, will result in improved search engine results. It is also on-going.  There is no “silver bullet” to shoot once and accomplish your goals.

I add value to my clients SEO projects by doing content creation on a monthly basis.  I use the 4-1-1 program, where I share more information than sell. This builds trust and familiarity towards the goal of building a relationship.
