It’s Free, So How Tough Can IT Be?

Three Tips before you create your own social media business page.

I run across businesses all the time that think since Social Media is FREE that they can easily set up accounts, profiles and business pages. They think by doing it themselves they will save money and still get good results.Social Media Collage

Sure applications like Facebook do have handy guides and step by step instructions on how to set up a Facebook page.  Doing it yourself, of having your teenage son or daughter do it for you might work, but more often than not, you will not be taking full advantage of what the social media site has to offer.

If you are a dentist, you know dentistry, not social media marketing.  I know social media and do not profess to know dentistry. That’s why I do not practice dentistry.

Why?

The mechanics of setting up a profile in a social channel is practically at the end of the process, not the beginning.

First

You need to have set goals of what you want to accomplish.  Not all social channels are right for everyone. There are literally thousands of places to be active, and how much time do you want to spend each day – that’s right 7 days a week – being involved in social media?

Second

Know Your Prospects. Customers already know you and how to find you.  Customer engagement in social channels is also one of the big pluses of social media. Still you need to know what your prospects are thinking, how they are going about searching for solutions that your business provides and where they are doing the searches. I always recommend a Buyer Persona study to gather important information on people you want to have as customers, this is like a customer profile study, but on prospects and involves more questions. Someday I will write a post on Buyer Personas, but until then I refer you to the queen of Buyer Personas, a good friend, and mentor Adele Rivera.

Third

Write the content for maximum SEO (Search Engine Optimization) benefit.  If you don’t do the first two tasks, you will not be able to do this.  You need to know the Keywords and Long-Tail Keywords that prospects use to conduct searches. Setting up a social media channel is NOT just for that channel. It is all about how it will help your business get found in a Google Search.

Social Media is NOT Easy

You may think setting up a page is the last time you will have to touch that channel…NOT!  Social media is about conversations and you need to be doing three things:

  1. Listening – listening to the conversations, all over the web, not just in the social channel.
  2. Engaging – Once you hear the conversation, you need to engage in the conversation.
  3. Publishing – that is creating posts in your social channels that encourages conversations, shares information an builds your SME status.

Stop, Think and Hire Someone

That is why you should step back and think about starting your own social media marketing program. Engage a marketer that can help you get started on the right foot. Shy away from anyone that calls themselves an Expert in social media. With the changes that take place in this field of marketing there is no such thing.  Even I do not call myself an expert here, rather I am a “Social Media Explorer.”

There is a lot more that is involved in creating a social media marketing strategy, so be sure to contact me before you start.  It is so much easier to start on the right foot than to try and fix what you have already created.
