PC protection: Good and Free

The other week, my wife’s PC was having some issues which I later discovered was a piece of malware that somehow got loaded onto the PC.  Mind you I am not blaming her or my grandson who also uses the computer from time to time. Even I have had malware loaded onto my powerhouse desktop unit which became a real “bear” to get rid of.

First I always recommend that if you use Internet Explorer, that you also download a second browser such as Firefox or Google’s Chrome.  That way incase the malware the infects your PC and keeps you from using IE, let’s say, you can at least use the other browser to go out to the web site tools you need to clean up your PC.

One of the best I have found is MalwareBytes.  It does a decent job of finding the little bugger corrupting your PC and removes its kicking and screaming. I used this once on my PC effectively.

Surprising as it may seem I had also installed on my wife’s PC a copy of Microsoft’s new Security Essentials package which is a free download as well (Norton Internet Security slowed her PC down to a crawl). While I was running MalwareBytes on the PC, MS Security Essentials ran a background scan, actually found the malware and cleaned it from the PC automatically. Previously I had used Microsoft’s Live One Care (and I paid for it) and found it to be less than satisfactory.  So, seeing that this worked so well and it is a rather comprehensive package, and FREE (at least for now) I have it on three of my PCs.  On a business laptop, I am currently using Norton Internet Security, which has been running well on that unit.  I had to take it off of my desktop as it was interfering with my Smartphone synchronization.

Other malware/spyware tools you can use free versions include (do a web search for the location):

  • Spybot Search and Destroy
  • AVG FREE (more of a anti-virus than a spyware catch and remove.)
  • Hyjack This

Happy Computing!
