Reviews, Recommendations, and your Business’ Reputation

Many times I see businesses ignore one of the first tenants of social media marketing…and that is to LISTEN.

It is actually more than that as not only should they be actively listening to what might be said about them or their business across not only social channels like Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Linkedin, Yelp* and many others. They also need to take control of lists and aggregators like, Angie’s List,, and Merchant Circle.

Angie’s List

Angie’s List is a special case since it is a member list which is private and not indexed by search engines, so setting up a Google Alert will never find a review that has been posted against your company unless you take control over the listing Angie’s List may have built for you.

imageThis past year for one of my clients, it was a natural to be on Angie’s List, since he is a General Contractor.  I set up the profile and packed it with keyword rich content, photos and a link to a video.

Several months after I filled in the profile a couple of reviews popped up on the listing.  These were not good reviews, but ones I prodded my client to respond to.

He did reply and then I told him he should encourage his customers to leave reviews on Angie’s List , Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+ and elsewhere where appropriate to counter any negative reviews and also improve his SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

Today he got a call from someone that saw his listing on Angie’s List  and is getting additional work from it.

He just had to call me and let me know that the Inbound Marketing strategy and tactics I have recommended has resulted in work for him.

Reputation Management

I don’t want to repeat everything I have written in my eBook on the subject of Online Reviews and Recommendations, so I am providing a link to it so you can download it and read it for your self.

There are instructions and reason why you should encourage your customers to leave positive reviews on your behalf. Not only doe it protect their reputation, it helps in SEO as well.

Enjoy and let me know what you think of the book with a comment or two.
