Using the 4-1-1 Principle with Social Media

Social media is meant to be CONVERSATIONAL

Too many times I see businesses and consultants use

Social Media in very traditional ways.  What I mean by that is they consider social media tools like Facebook, Google+, LinkedIn to be like radio and television where they “post and run” thinking the more the post to ever wider audiences they will make an impression and generate business. The truth is most people that use social media really hate interruptive ads in the first place and companies that constantly just post sales messages are not going to be held in high regard.

You need to use social media tools in a conversational way; many-to-many dialogs, not one-to-many monologues – which is the basis of traditional media where “Reach and Frequency” are measured for results. Whenever you create a post or update remember to make it conversational, say something in your comments that is designed to start a conversation with your followers.

The 4-1-1 Principle

Now I cannot remember where I heard the concept of the 4-1-1 in social media, as I read many blogs, but it could have been one of Chris Brogan’s ideas as I like to follow and converse with him.

Basically it comes down to this when you post an update to any of your social media tools.

1. Share FOUR (4) news stories, things of interest to your followers that will help them in their business. Expect and ask for nothing in return, BUT do make an effort to start a conversation and dialog in your networks.

2. Reshare or Retweet ONE (1) update from someone you follow with your network.  Again, do not sell, expect or ask for anything in return outside of dialog.  This does two things, you are sharing information that you find useful and could be useful to your network and you just expanded the network of someone you follow.

3. Share ONE (1) original update or post that not only educates – like this blog post – but also asks not only for engagement…the conversation… it also sells something you can do for people in your network.

What Now?
